Ethanol Power from Saab

Saab is continuing its drive to produce vehicles that runs on cleaner burning fuels. They have already made to the public a 9-5 BioPower which run on E85 fuel which is a combination of 85 percent bio-ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. This is similar to Volvo models which run on the same fuel. This may seem not enough for the car manufacturer since at the forthcoming 2007 Geneva Motor Show; they will be showcasing a 9-5 wagon which is equipped with a 2.0-liter engine that runs on E100 or 100 percent bio-ethanol. The concept car will be shown to the public as a testament of the car maker's dedication to developing cleaner engines. The use of 100 percent fuel in an engine is a great stride forward in the use of alternative fuels.

In connection with the unveiling of the concept car, GM Powertrain CEO Kjell ac Bergstrom has this to say: "Bio-ethanol is a potent, high quality fuel which opens up exciting possibilities in helping to meet the environmental challenges that face us. As the need to reduce energy consumption increases, we are exploring ways to run smaller engines that give relatively high power, with and without hybrid technology. This concept car shows that ethanol can play a key role in this 'right-sizing' process, while also minimizing fossil fuel emissions."

The Saab 9-5 BioPower 100 concept car's engine is the first of its kind to run on pure ethanol. The design of the car's engine components optimizes the capacity of the engine. The 2.0-liter engine can produce as much as 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. That torque is essential for acceleration, given that amount of pulling force; the concept car can be propelled to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in just 6.6 seconds. This acceleration is complemented by a high top speed; thanks to the 300 horsepower that the engine packs. Aside from this, aftermarket parts can be installed to decrease the drag and increase the traction of the wheels on road surfaces. Spoilers can be used to achieve this, just like those Volvos which use a Volvo spoiler to boost performance.

Using 100 percent ethanol or anhydrous ethanol as a fuel is a good alternative to gasoline. This is because ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline, reducing emissions by as much as 85 percent. This is why flexi-fuel vehicles or those that runs on a combination of gasoline and ethanol has cleaner emission than those that runs on gasoline alone. Those engines that use ethanol as fuel, just like the Saab concept car uses looks just like a conventional gasoline engine with just a few modifications. Some of these modifications are done to combat the corrosive nature of ethanol. Some engine components need to be fortified to take on the corrosiveness of this alternative fuel. Another reason why ethanol is a good alternative to gasoline is that it is a renewable source of energy. Ethanol comes from starch or sugar from a wide variety of crops like corn and sugarcane.

The only problem facing the development of ethanol as an alternative fuel is that in its production, fossil fuels are still used. This poses a question if the good effects of using ethanol as fuel for vehicles can upset the emission produced on the production of the said fuel. The concept car also remains to be seen if it is feasible to be mass produced since no filling station has yet to offer 100 percent ethanol. The future of this technology still remains to be seen depending on the way the public will accept it.

Environment-friendly Vehicles Showcased by Ford Motor Company

The Ford Motor Company is one of the car manufacturers committed to cleaning the air. They are doing their part in the protection of the environment by designing and producing alternative fuel vehicles. They are also a good supporter of President Bush's proposed mandate of reducing the dependency of the country on foreign oil and reducing the amount of harmful greenhouse emissions by as much as 20 percent by the year 2017. At the recently held 2007 Washington (D.C.) Auto Show, the domestic car manufacturer has unveiled the hydrogen-fueled, battery-powered, plug-in Ford Edge.

During the unveiling of the cutting-edge alternative fuel vehicle, government officials and legislators are present. Their presence is important for the carmaker, since they can show the lawmakers what they can develop in the future and that their effort in cleaning up the environment and reducing dependency on foreign oil is quite possible. Scott Staley, the Chief Engineer for Ford's Hybrid and Fuel Cell Technology Development, commented that: "Besides the public, the audience in Washington includes people in charge of energy and clean air policy so this is very much a showplace for exhibiting what Ford technology can do in the future".
The Ford Edge unveiled at the Washington Auto Show was developed under contract from the US Department of Energy. This is another sign that the government is serious in their effort to help car makers in the development of clean cars. The main technology in the hydrogen electric hybrid vehicle is the HySeries Drive. The system uses the hydrogen fuel cell to recharge the 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack. The Ford Edge hybrid uses the battery for the first 25 miles of operation, with a top speed of 85 miles per hour. Once the system detects that the battery has lost as much as 40 percent of its charge, the fuel cell then takes on the job of powering the car. While the vehicle runs on the fuel cell, the battery is being charged for future use.

The capability of the system to shift from battery to fuel cell power allows the Ford Edge to travel as far as 225 miles on a full charge. In terms of MPG rating, the equivalent rating of the Ford Edge hybrid is 41 miles per gallon. Aside from the fact that the battery can be charge using the fuel cell as it powers the vehicle, the Ford Edge is also a plug-in car. This means that its battery can be charged using a standard household electrical outlet.

The Ford Edge is one of a kind in the sense that most hybrid electric vehicles use an electric motor powered by a battery pack to complement an internal combustion engine. This means that these vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, also make use of gasoline although in significantly lower amounts. In contrast, the Ford Edge hybrid uses fuel cell to complement the use of battery power to drive the vehicle. Aside from the capability of the Ford Edge hydrogen electric hybrid to use alternative fuels, it is also made out of reliable parts, as reliable and as tough as Volvo 850 parts.

The Ford Motor Company continues their dedication to producing environmentally-friendly vehicles. The domestic car maker is the first to develop, produce, and introduce to the public an SUV hybrid. Bush Continues Crusade for Alternative Fuel

Last January 31, 2006, President George W. Bush outlined his plan for the widespread use of alternative fuels in the country. In his State of the Union Address last month, he announced a proposed mandate that 35 billion gallons of ethanol be produced until the year 2017. He also proposed to reduce the amount of emissions of greenhouse gasses by as much as 20 percent by the year 2017. Out of the 35 billion gallons mandated to be produced, 15 billion gallons of ethanol will come from starch while the 20 billion gallons will be from cellulose or cellulosic ethanol.

Cellulosic ethanol is a type of ethanol which comes from cellulose. This is different from the normal ethanol which comes from sugars and starches. This kind of ethanol is what Novozymes are helping to develop. The company has developed an enzyme cocktail that makes the mass production of cellulose ethanol possible. This technology is a better alternative to normal ethanol since the production of the latter causes the increase in the price of corn. This is because cellulosic ethanol comes from biomass including wastes from urban, agricultural, and forestry sources. In the production of this type of ethanol, no toxic emissions are generated which makes it a better alternative than other fuels.

Novozymes recently received a very distinguished guest - the President himself. Bush toured the facility's laboratories and he also did pose for pictures with the workers of the company. The visit of the President at the facility is a part of his effort to boost the morale of those working in the alternative fuel industry. Aside from the financial support of the administration in the form of $2 billion aid in the funding of cellulosic ethanol plants, he also provides moral support though his visits to those plants such as that one in Novozymes.

The use of ethanol as fuel for cars in the United States is a part of the administration's effort to address the problem of global warming. Ethanol is a good substitute to gasoline since it burns cleaner than gasoline. The only thing to consider about the use of ethanol as fuel is its corrosive nature. Without fortification, engine parts like Volvo 240 parts will be corroded. To combat this corrosive nature of ethanol, car manufacturers and engine designers fortify different components of the car to take on the corrosive nature of ethanol.

With the increasing awareness of the global community towards addressing the global warming issue, the United States is on its track towards making a difference. The country has been criticized in the past for being one of the major causes of the destruction of the environment. With the steps being taken by the government and the private sector, alternative fuels like ethanol will one day be the most commonly used fuel by the majority on US roads. Aside from the development of ethanol as the fuel of the future, US agencies are also developing biodiesel for use of vehicles equipped with a diesel engine. Aside from these two alternative fuels, the US market is also being flooded with hybrid cars which also reduce the dependency of the country on imported oil fossil fuels.

President Bush's commitment to the development of alternative fuel is a great boost for the industry. With the government's backing, more and more alternative fuels can be produced which will result to cleaner emission by vehicles. The development of these alternative fuels can also increase the number of employed person in the country. It would also decrease the dependency of the country on other countries which produce oil and then later on export them to the US.

These days one of biggest worries most drivers have in their minds is how much the gallon of gas will cost tomorrow. With the huge increases in oil prices that we have witnessed during the recent months, there have been weeks when there seems to be no limit to the price gas will climb next day and this only means more sacrifices for most drivers that have to adjust their budgets accordingly and spend more of their hard earned money in filling up the gas tank and less on a number of things, with many cases where even food rations must be sacarified in these extreme cases.

Twelve Greenest Cars Named

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has recently named the twelve cleanest cars in the US today. The agency named the best fuel efficient cars in the market today to aid consumers who are in the market for a car that will give them great fuel economy and would be able to take a part in the drive to protect the environment.

For ten years, the council has compiled the twelve greenest cars for every model year. And for only the second time in the history of the council, every single car included in this year's list comes from Asian car makers. The list also featured four new models which show the increasing number of green cars being produced. The reason mainly is the rising prices of gasoline and the increasing environmental awareness in the public.

Leading the list is the Honda Civic GX which runs on compressed natural gas. The GX looks just like the ordinary Civic model but its fuel efficiency is much better. The car is Honda's answer to the demand for cleaner cars and with this car, they have set a new standard in the clean car segment. While hybrid electric cars are the most popular cars in terms of fuel efficiency, the Honda Civic GX proves that there is a better alternative to using electric motors to drive a car. The use of compressed natural gas can still be enhanced with aftermarket parts like a DC Sports cold air intake component that will cool the air going into the combustion chamber. The Honda Civic GX is only rated at 100 horsepower and 98 lb-ft of torque but the continuously variable transmission employed by the GX efficiently transfers all those power to the wheels.

Following the Honda Civic GX in the list is the popular Toyota Prius. This Toyota hybrid has become an instant hit when it was introduced to the US market. The soaring gas prices prompted a huge number of American motorists to go for a car such as this. The Prius uses an electric motor to ease the load carried by its engine. This translates to better fuel economy since during idling and low-sped driving, the electric motor takes over the operation of the car.
The third car in the list is another hybrid and another car from Honda. The Honda Civic Hybrids also makes it as one of the cleanest cars in production today. The inclusion of the second Honda model in the top three shows and reflects the dedication of Honda in developing and producing cars that are environmentally friendly. The top three cars are rated as PZEV or Partially Zero-Emission Vehicles.

Another Asian car manufacturer that made it to the list of the top twelve cleanest cars is Nissan. Their Nissan Altima Hybrid is the fourth cleanest car in production today. The Altima Hybrid is also rated as a partially zero-emissions vehicle.

The fifth car on the green list is another Toyota model which is the Toyota Yaris. The Yaris is rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle II. Two other Toyotas follow the Yaris in the list. These are the Toyota Corolla and the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Toyota also has been making progress in the production of clean vehicles which is evident in the entry of four of their models in the top twelve green cars.

The Honda Fit which recently won Best of The Year Award at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show also appeared as the eighth cleanest car. Kia, another Asian brand has also a car in the top twelve list, this being the Kia Rio/Rio 5. Other cars which made the list are the Hyundai Accent and the Elantra. The conventional Honda Civic is the twelfth cleanest car.

If for some reason you already have a large amount of cooking oil that you need to dispose of then a biodiesel kit would work perfectly. It does take more time to process used oil but the results are the same, a more environmentally friendly fuel that can be put into a diesel powered vehicle.

Considering that the price of gasoline is on an ever rising trend making biodiesel for personal use can be seen as a smart move. Having your own biodiesel kit producing a constant supply of a low cost environmentally friendly fuel right in your own backyard would remove the sting of high pump prices.

The Rising Popularity of Biodiesel Fuel

With the rising price of gasoline these days the idea of turning to a more affordable alternative fuel source is becoming more appealing to many people. Biodiesel fuel is an alternative fuel that many people are making right in their own backyards from renewable sources that are readily available.

Another alternative fuel that is in the news these days is ethanol. Ethanol is being sold in the U.S. and in other countries as a viable alternative to regular gasoline but if you don't have access to an ethanol station or don't have a car that has been modified to run on it then another choice is needed. Biodiesel is the perfect fuel to fill that spot because of the ease with which it can be made.

If this is your first exposure to biodiesel then a little explanation of what it is in order. Biodiesel is a fuel that is mode from vegetable oil that can be used in cars and truck with diesel engines.
